Tibero
Tibero is a relational databases and database management system utility developed by TmaxSoft. TmaxSoft has been developing Tibero since 2003, and in 2008 it was the second company in the world to deliver a shared-disk-based cluster, TAC. The main products are Tibero, Tibero MMDB, Tibero ProSync, Tibero InfiniData and Tibero DataHub.
Tibero, a Relational Database Management System is considered an alternative to Oracle Databases due to its complete compatibility with Oracle products, including SQL.
Tibero guarantees reliable database transactions, which are logical sets of SQL statements, by supporting ACID. Providing enhanced synchronization between databases, Tibero 5 enables reliable database service operation in a multi node environment.
Tibero has implemented a unique Tibero Thread Architecture to address the disadvantages of previous DBMS. As a result, Tibero can make efficient use of system resources, such as CPU and memory, through fewer server processes. This ensures that Tibero offers a combination of performance, stability, and expandability, while facilitating development and administration functions. Additionally, it provides users and developers with various standard development interface to easily integrate with other DBMS and 3rd party tools.
In addition, the block transfer technology has been applied to improve ‘Tibero Active Cluster’- the shared DB clustering technology which is similar to Oracle RAC. Tibero supports self-tuning based performance optimization, reliable database monitoring, and performance management.
In Korea, Tibero has been adopted by more than 450 companies across a range of industries from Finance, Manufacturing and Communication, to the public sector and globally by more than 14 companies, as of July 2011.

Processes
Listener
Listener receives requests for new connections from clients and assigns them to an available working thread. Listener plays an intermediate role between clients and working threads using an independent executable file, tblistener.Working process or foreground process
- A working process communicates with client processes and handles user requests. Tibero creates multiple working processes when a server starts to support connections from multiple client processes. Tibero handles jobs using threads to efficiently use resources.
- One working process consists of one control thread and multiple working threads. A working process contains one control thread and ten working threads by default. default. The number of working threads per process can be set using the initialization parameter, and after Tibero begins, this number cannot be changed.
- Control thread Creates as many working threads as specified in the initialization parameter when Tibero is started, allocates new client connection requests to an idle working thread, and Checks signal processing.
- A working thread communicates directly with a single client process. It receives and handles messages from a client process and returns the result. It handles most DBMS jobs such as SQL parsing and optimization. Even after a working thread is disconnected from a client, it does not disappear. It is created when Tibero starts and is removed when Tibero terminates. This improves system performance as threads do not need to be created or removed even if connections to clients need to be made frequently.
Background process
The following are the processes that belong to the background process group:
Monitor Thread (MTHR)
- The monitor thread is a single independent process despite being named Monitor Thread. It is the first thing created after Listener when Tibero starts. It is the last process to finish when Tibero terminates. The monitor thread creates other processes when Tibero starts and checks each process status and deadlocks periodically.
Sequence Writer (AGENT or SEQW)
- The sequence process performs internal jobs for Tibero that are needed for system maintenance.
Data Block Writer (DBWR or BLKW)
- This process writes changed data blocks to disk. The written data blocks are usually read directly by working threads.
Checkpoint Process (CKPT)
- The checkpoint process manages Checkpoint. Checkpoint is a job that periodically writes all changed data blocks in memory to disk, or when a client requests it. Checkpoint prevents the recovery time from exceeding a certain limit if a failure occurs in Tibero.
Log Writer (LGWR or LOGW)
- This process writes redo log files to disk. Log files contain all information about changes in the database's data. They are used for fast transaction processing and restoration.
Features
Other features include; Row-level locking, multi-version concurrency control, Parallel query processing, and partition table support.
Major features
Distributed Database Links
- Stores data in a different database instance. By using this function, a read or write operation can be performed for data in a remote database across a network. Other vendors' RDBMS solutions can also be used for read and write operations.
Data replication
- This function copies all changed contents of the operating database to a standby database. This can be done by sending change logs through a network to a standby database, which then applies the changes to its data.
Database clustering
- This function resolves the biggest issues for any enterprise RDBMS, which are high availability and high performance. To achieve this, Tibero RDBMS implements a technology called Tibero Active Cluster.
- Database clustering allows multiple database instances to share a database with a shared disk. It is important that clustering maintain consistency among the instances' internal database caches. This is also implemented in TAC.
Parallel query processing
- Data volumes for businesses are continually rising. Because of this, it is necessary to have parallel processing technology which provides maximum usage of server resources for massive data processing. To meet these needs, Tibero RDBMS supports transaction parallel processing functions optimized for OLTP and SQL parallel processing functions optimized for OLAP. This allows queries to complete more quickly.
The query optimizer
- The query optimizer decides the most efficient plan by considering various data handling methods based on statistics for the schema objects.
Row Level Locking
- Tibero RDBMS uses row level locking to guarantee fine-grained lock control. It maximizes concurrency by locking a row, the smallest unit of data. Even if multiple rows are modified, concurrent DMLs can be performed because the table is not locked. Through this method, Tibero RDBMS provides high performance in an OLTP environment.
Tibero Active Cluster
- Ensures business continuity and supports reliability and high availability
- Supports complete load balancing
- Ensures data integrity
- Shares a buffer cache among instances, by using the Global Cache
- Monitors a failure by checking the HeartBeat through the TBCM
Processing time can be reduced because a larger job can be divided into smaller jobs, and then the jobs can be performed by several nodes.
Multiple systems share data files based on shared disks. Nodes act as if they use a single shared cache by sending and receiving the data blocks necessary to organize TAC through a high speed private network that connects the nodes.
Even if a node stops while operating, other nodes will continue their services. This transition happens quickly and transparently.
TAC is a cluster system at the application level. It provides high availability and scalability for all types of applications. So, It is recommended to apply a replication architecture to not only servers but also to hardware and storage devices. This helps improve high availability. Virtual IP is assigned for each node in a TAC cluster. If a node in the TAC cluster has failed, its Public IP cannot be accessed but Virtual IP will be used for connections and for connection failover.
Main components
The following are the main components of TAC.Cluster Wait-Lock Service (CWS)
- Enables existing Wait-lock to operate in a cluster. Distributed Lock Manager is embedded in this module.
- Wlock can access CWS through GWA. The related background processes are LASW, LKDW, and RCOW.
- Wlock controls synchronization with other nodes through CWS in TAC environments that supports multi instances.
Global Wait-Lock Adapter (GWA)
- Sets and manages the CWS Lock Status Block, the handle to access CWS, and its parameters.
- Changes the lock mode and timeout used in Wlock depending on CWS, and registers the Complete Asynchronous Trap and Blocking Asynchronous Trap used in CWS.
Cluster Cache Control (CCC)
- Controls access to data blocks in a cluster. DLM is embedded.
- CR Block Server, Current Block Server, Global Dirty Image, and Global Write services are included.
- The Cache layer can access CCC through GCA. The related background processes are: LASC, LKDC, and RCOC.
Global Cache Adapter (GCA)
- Provides an interface that allows the Cache layer to use the CCC service.
- Sets and manages CCC LKSB, the handle to access CCC, and its parameters. It also changes the block lock mode used in the Cache layer for CCC.
- Saves data blocks and Redo logs for the lock-down event of CCC and offers an interface for DBWR to request a Global write and for CCC to request a block write from DBWR.
- CCC sends and receives CR blocks, Global dirty blocks, and current blocks through GCA.
Message Transmission Control (MTC)
- Solves the problem of message loss between nodes and out-of-order messages.
- Manages the retransmission queue and out-of-order message queue.
- Guarantees the reliability of communication between nodes in modules such as CWS and CCC by providing General Message Control. Inter-Instance Call, Distributed Deadlock Detection, and Automatic Workload Management currently use GMC for communication between nodes.
Inter-Node Communication (INC)
- Provides network connections between nodes.
- Transparently provides network topology and protocols to users of INC and manages protocols such as TCP and UDP.
Node Membership Service (NMS)
- Manages weights that show the workload and information received from TBCM such as the node ID, IP address, port number, and incarnation number.
- Provides a function to look up, add, or remove node membership. The related background process is NMGR.
