Nathan Tomasello
Nathan Tomasello is an American freestyle and graduated folkstyle wrestler. In freestyle, he is a National runner-up and Junior National Champion. As a folkstyle wrestler, he is an NCAA champion, four-time NCAA All-American and four-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Ohio State University. He is also a four-time OHSAA champion as a high schooler.
High school
As a high schooler, Tomasello is a four-time Ohio title holder in Division II out of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. He graduated with an undefeated record of 51 wins and no losses as a senior and 178 wins with 5 losses overall.College
After graduation, he was recruited by Ohio State University.2013-14
and compiled an undefeated record of 19 wins and no losses at 125-pounds.2014-15
As a freshman, he became the Big Ten Conference and National champion beating accomplished opponents such as Thomas Gilman and #1-ranked Alan Waters. He compiled a record of 33 wins and 4 losses throughout the season.2015-16
As a sophomore, he won his second Big Ten title in a row, qualifying for the NCAA's. At the NCAA tournament, he was pinned by Thomas Gilman in the semifinals, but managed to come back with two straight wins to claim the third-place spot and finish his season with a 27-1 record.2016-17
As a junior he moved up a weight-class and competed at 133 pounds. He became a 3-time Big Ten champion and helped the Buckeyes to win the team title. At the 2017 NCAA Championships, he entered as the #1-seeded wrestler and beat 3 opponents before falling to Iowa's Cory Clark. He again placed third, this time downing the #5 and #7 seeds in the consolation bracket.2017-18
As a senior, he moved down to wrestle at 125-pounds again. He became the fifteenth wrestler to win 4 individual Big Ten Conference championships. At the NCAA Nationals, he downed 3 opponents before falling in the semifinals for the third time, this time downed by Spencer Lee. Once again, he managed to come back defeating Sebastian Rivera and Ethan Lizak to claim the third-place.Overall, Tomasello is a 1-time NCAA champion, 4-time All-American and 4-time Big Ten Conference champion with a record of 100-8, holding notable wins over Thomas Gilman and Spencer Lee.
Freestyle
Prior to competing in freestyle wrestling as a senior, he wrestled multiple times at the youth level in national tournaments. Some of his accomplishments as a youth wrestler are: UWW Junior National champion, 3-time USAW Junior National champion and FILA Cadet National champion.2014
In his first senior-level competition, he attended the Northeast Regional. After downing four opponents by technical fall, he was crowned champion of the tournament.2015
After his successful freshman season at OSU, he competed at the ASICS US Nationals. He got pinned in the opening round, but managed to come back and win three matches in a row before getting stopped by points.Later, he competed at the Bill Farrell in his first International senior freestyle competition. He won two matches before getting stopped by 2016 Olympian Daniel Dennis. In the consolation bracket, he defeated two other opponents but lost again, getting eliminated.
In the last tournament of the year, he competed at the US Nationals. He placed fifth, going 5-2 with notable wins over Stevan Mićić and Joe Colon.
2016
At the US Olympic Team Trials, he went 2-2, with a win over 2015 Pan American runner-up Angel Escobedo.2017
In the first competition of the year, Tomasello attended the US Open. He won his first three matches before losing a close criteria decision to Tony Ramos. He won his next two matches to claim the bronze medal.Due to his last result, he qualified for the US World Team Trials. He won his first two bouts before losing to former collegiate opponent Thomas Gilman. To determine the true second of the Challenge Tournament, he faced Tyler Graff, whom he defeated to claim silver.
In his second International senior freestyle competition, he attended the Ion Cernea Memorial. He won three straight bouts to claim gold.
Later, he competed at the Aleksandr Medved Memorial. He won three bouts before falling in the finals and claiming silver.
He then competed at the U23 US World Team Trials in an opportunity to compete at the World Championships. He defeated two opponents in the Challenge Tournament to face Daton Fix in a best-of-three. He lost two bouts to zero, getting eliminated of the tournament.
2019
In his freestyle return, he competed at the US Open. He defeated three opponents to face Thomas Gilman. Tomasello was down 0-8 and got three caution calls, getting disqualified. He forfeited his next match against Vitali Arujau and placed sixth.Later, he attended the Bill Farrell Memorial. He downed four opponent and made the finals, but ended up getting teched by Seth Gross to claim runner-up honors.
He went back to the national circuit and competed at the US Nationals. He once again amassed four wins but lost to 3-time Youth World Champion Spencer Lee in the finals.
2020
In the first competition of the year, he attended the Granma & Cerro Pelado International. He won two bouts to make the finals, in where he lost to two-time Pan American champion Reineri Andreu.Tomasello was scheduled to compete at the US Olympic Trials, however, the event was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the qualifiers unable to compete.
