William Gardner (VC)
William Gardner VC DCM was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.Details
He was 37 years old, and a colour-sergeant in the 42nd Regiment of Foot, British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 5 May 1858 at Bareilly, India for which he was awarded the VC:He later achieved the rank of sergeant-Major. His medal was sold by one of his descendants to raise money for charity. His VC is on display in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum, London.
