Waldemar Otto


Waldemar Otto was a Polish-born German sculptor.

Biography

Otto was born in Petrikau, Poland and fled in 1945 with his parents to Halle in Germany.
In 1948 Otto started a sculpture study at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 1952 he graduated as "Meisterschüler" under Alexander Gonda. His first success came in 1957, winning the "Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung" award. He made his first torso in 1961, which would become his characteristic style. All strongly abstracted, not patinated and gave them names such as: "Weibliche torso", "Gedrehter torso", "Kleiner Männlicher Torso", "Sockel Torso", "Torso vor Raster”, Figur vor Gewand.
In 1973 he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. From 1976 he lived and worked in the in Lower Saxony not far from Bremen.
