Truesdale was laid out in 1857 when the railroad was extended to that point. The community has the name of William Truesdale, a railroad man. Variant names were "Truesdail" and "Truesdaile". A post office called Truesdail was established in 1889, and remained in operation until 1979.

The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.30. The median age in the city was 29.1 years. 30.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.1% were from 25 to 44; 20.1% were from 45 to 64; and 7.9% were 65 years of age or older. There were 145 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% were married couples living together, 16.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.45. In the city, the population was spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 114.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 117.7 males. The median income for a household in the city was $28,359, and the median income for a family was $29,583. Males had a median income of $27,679 versus $21,125 for females.
