Suzuki Mehran


The Suzuki Mehran is a globally retired small car which was manufactured and marketed until 2019 by Pak Suzuki Motors, a subsidiary of Suzuki in Pakistan. It is a rebranded second-generation Suzuki Alto CA/CC71 which was sold in the Japanese and European market from 1984 to 1988. When the second generation of Suzuki Mehran arrived in Pakistan in 1989, it cost around Pakistani rupee 90,000. In November 2016, the Suzuki Mehran sells for around 650,000 Pakistani rupee.
In 2015, press reports indicated the car sold for US$6,500-7700, a very high price for a car with everything manually operated, and with no safety features. The car lacks airbags, ABS, rear window defogger, side air conditioner vents, seat belt reminder and even rear seat belts.
After 2013, a EURO II engine was installed to meet the requirements of Pakistan's lagging emission standards. The suspension system is based on a low cost obsolete leaf spring rigid axle.
In September 2018, Suzuki Mehran accounted for 47,199 units in the Pak Suzuki Motors's overall production of 145,416 vehicles in 2017–18. This car was popular among all the segments of Pakistani society who wanted to shift from two wheelers to a four-wheel drive car. Suzuki Mehran was a low cost maintenance and high resale value car with a steady high demand. As compared to other locally assembled cars, Suzuki Mehran model had achieved 72% locally assembled status in Pakistan over a 30 years period of its production.
In February 2019, Pak Suzuki Motors launched its Suzuki Mehran VX model car at a retail price of 825,000 Pakistani rupees with a choice three colors - white, silky silver and graphite grey.
Pak Suzuki Motors produced Suzuki Mehran to replace its Suzuki FX model in Pakistan in 1988. After that, the company had not introduced any major changes in Suzuki Mehran until 2012, when this car was upgraded to Euro II technology.
In November 2018, Finance Minister of Pakistan, Asad Umar said that Global Chairman of Suzuki Motors had shown interest to invest $450 million to expand car production in Pakistan.
