Sumatran frogmouth


The Sumatran frogmouth, also known as the short-tailed frogmouth is a bird in the family Podargidae. It is endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It was formerly considered conspecific with the Bornean frogmouth.

Description

Sexes dimorphic. Adult males have an overall dull rufous-brown, a buffish-white collar distinct, bold whits spots on scapular area. White markings characterize the breast, flanks and abdomen. Scalloped pattern of feathers distinct on abdomen. Appears less darkish brown than congenetic Short-tailed Frogmouth. It is only distinguished for the latter by vocalizations. Females paler, cinnamon colored.

Habitat

Found maily in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Ecology

It primarily feeds on insects.

Threats and Conservation

This endemic bird is listed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss.
