Starship Entertainment


Starship Entertainment is a South Korean entertainment company established in 2008 and a subsidiary of Kakao M under its Music Content Company division.
The label is home to K-Pop artists such as Monsta X, K.Will, Soyou, OG School Project, Jooyoung,, Cravity, Wonho, Yoo Seung-woo, Brother Su, Cosmic Girls, #Gun, Mind U, Duetto, Jeong Se-woon, and formerly to Sistar, Boyfriend, Junggigo, and Mad Clown. It also manages the actors Choi Won-myeong, Dasom and Kang Eun-ah. It operates in three main locations and is staffed with approximately 200 employees, funded by both commercial investors and its parent company, Kakao M.

History

Starship Entertainment was founded in 2008 by the couple Kim Shi-dae and Seo Hyun-joo, who both worked for other Korean entertainment companies, together with current Kakao M executive Kim Young-suk. Kim Shi-dae previously worked as a road manager for a K-pop band named Cool and worked for Hitman Bang 's company Big Hit Entertainment between 2005 and 2007, while Seo Hyun-joo worked for J.Y. Park "The Asiansoul"'s JYP Entertainment.
Starship's first artist was ex-Big Hit singer K.Will, followed by Sistar, Boyfriend, Monsta X, Cosmic Girls, and Jeong Se-woon.
On 18 December 2013, 70% of the label's shares was acquired by its distributor, Kakao M, making it an independent subsidiary of the latter.
In May 2015, Starship Entertainment had acquired 100% of King Kong Entertainment's shares in a strategic partnership alliance. On 2 January 2017, Starship Entertainment and King Kong Entertainment registered their merger. The agencies mutually agreed to use the name Starship Entertainment while the division that manages the actors will be operating under the label “King Kong by Starship”.
