Stacey Milbern


Stacey Park Milbern was an American disability rights activist. She helped create the disability justice movement and advocated for fair treatment of people with disabilities.

Biography

Milbern was born in Seoul on May 19, 1987 and had muscular dystrophy. She grew up in North Carolina in a military family with a white father working in the United States Army and a Korean mother. Her family has acted as a caregiver to her over the years. Later, she would identify as queer and knew she'd have to move out of her conservative family home. Milbern graduated from Methodist University in 2009 and moved to the Bay Area when she was 24. She earned a masters degree from Mills College in 2015.
In 2005, Milbern helped to establish the disability justice movement. She advocated for fair medical care for people with disabilities. Milbern also advised the Obama administration for two years.
Milbern died in a Stanford hospital on her 33rd birthday.
