Sreepur upazila is the smallest upazila in Magura district, according to a 1859 year survey. In particular, little is known about the nomenclature of this upazila. However, it is reported that during the reign of the Pala king in the ninth century, it was an important city. At one time in the Sreepur region there was a king ruled by a "Virat Raja". His real name was Raja Ram Chandra. The king's wife's name was Sridevi. The upazila is named after Sridevi.
Administration
Sreepur consists of two mouzas. The area of the town is 3.11 km2. It has a population of 4152; male 51.13%, female 48.87%; population density per km2 is 1335. Literacy rate among the town people is 42.4%. Administration Sreepur thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of eight union parishads, 83 mouzas and 162 villages. Barishat is the biggest village in not only Sripur but also Magura district. People of multi classes live here. Maximum occupation can be found here. The Eidgaon of Barishat is also the biggest of Magura district.

Notable Residents
Kazi Kader Newaj teacher and poet, born in Talibpur in the district of Murshidabad.He published several books of poems, among them Maral, Dadur Baithak, Nil Kumudi, Duti Pakhi Duti Tara, Manidvip, Utala Sandhya, Kaler Hawa, and Maruchandrika. He received the President's Award, Bangla Academy Award and Madar Baksh Award. Kazi Kader Newaj died in Jessore in 1983. Farrukh Ahmad was a poet and writer of Bangladesh. He is commonly known as the 'Poet of the Muslim renaissance', as many of his poems embody the spirit of resurrection, particularly in the hearts of the down-trodden Muslims of the then Bengal.
