Sima Ćirković


Sima Ćirković was a Yugoslav and Serbian historian, member of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts. He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts. His works focused on medieval Serbian history.

Life

Sima Ćirković was born on 29 January 1929 in Osijek.

Education

He attended primary school in Sombor, gymnasium first in Belgrade during German occupation, and then in Sombor. He began attending the Faculty of Philosophy and History Studies in Belgrade in 1948 and graduated in 1952. In 1957 defended his doctoral dissertation "Herceg Stefan Vukčić Kosača i njegovo doba" and after that he became an assistant professor on the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade for history of the people of Yugoslavia in the middle ages. Full professor became in 1968, vice-dean and dean, he retired in 1994.

Activism

In 1986, Ćirković exercised a criticism of the Memorandum of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts while during the Siege of Dubrovnik in 1991 he and other Yugoslav historians sent an open letter to the Yugoslavian forces asking them to not damage historical district of the city.

Legacy and awards

Ćirković received "Oktobarska Award", "Prosveta Award", "Sedmojulska Award" of the Socialist Republic of Serbia for lifetime achievement, "Orden rada sa crvenom zastavom", Belgrade Award, Medal "Konstantin Jirecek" of the German Society for Southeast Europe.
