Salisbury Guildhall

Salisbury Guildhall is a municipal building in the Market Place, Salisbury. It is a Grade II* listed building and is the meeting place of the Salisbury City Council.

History

The site was previously occupied by the old Bishop's Guildhall which had fallen into a state of disrepair and needed demolition. The new building, which was designed by Sir Robert Taylor and William Pilkington, was completed in 1795. A grand jury room was added in 1829. There was a bomb explosion outside the Guildhall in September 1884; according to the judge, the defendants had been "motivated by a mischievous desire to alarm the public". The building was extensively refurbished in 2011.
