SENG is a nationwide nonprofit organization with a mission to "empower families and communities to guide gifted and talented individuals to reach their goals: intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually."
Background
In 1981, SENG was formed to bring attention to the unique emotional needs of gifted children. It provided adults with guidance, information, resources, and a forum to communicate about raising and educating these children. SENG is an independent, non-profit 501 entity with a diverse Board of Directors.
Programs
SENG offers a variety of programs which educate parents, educators, and mental health providers on the importance of understanding the social and emotional needs of the gifted.
SENGinars
Online webinars on topics addressing social and emotional topics are offered regularly. SENGinars include a wide variety of gifted topics, with an international audience including parents, educators, and mental health providers, depending on the SENGinar. In addition to social and emotional content, many SENGinars focus on diverse populations of gifted including minority cultures, socioeconomic groups, and other diverse groups. Archives of past SENGinars are available.
SENG has pursued outreach throughout the United States by training facilitators to run local parent education groups. These SENG Model Parent Groups hold 8 to 10 weekly sessions on topics of interest to gifted parents.
SENG Conference
The SENG annual conference, usually held in July, provides sessions for parents, teachers, psychologists and gifted adults, and workshops and activitiesfor kids and teens. Conference exhibitors offer a wide variety of gifted-related resources, including books and toys that gifted kids love, as well as books and curriculum for parents and teachers.
SENG Misdiagnosis Initiative
SENG supports increased giftedness awareness by medical professionals to decrease medical misdiagnosis. SENG does this in part by providing free informational materials.
SENG Continuing Education programs offer CE credit for psychologists. CE courses are available both at the Annual Conference and through Home Study courses.
