Rough Magic


Rough Magic is a 1995 comedy film directed by Clare Peploe, starring Bridget Fonda and Russell Crowe. The screenplay was written by Robert Mundi, William Brookfield, and Clare Peploe. Rough Magic is based on the 1944 novel Miss Shumway Waves a Wand by British novelist James Hadley Chase; that novel had previously been adapted as the 1962 French-Argentine film Une blonde comme ça.

Plot

The film is set in the 1950s and focuses on an apprentice magician who goes to Mexico to escape her fiancé, a wealthy politician, and to find a Mayan shaman who will teach her ancient principles of magic. She is being trailed by a detective, a former photojournalist traumatized by what he saw in Hiroshima, hired by her fiancé. He joins her in the search for the Mayan shaman, and falls in love with her.
