Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 Rising Pune Supergiant was a franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra , India, which played in the Indian Premier League in 2016 and 2017. It was one of the eight teams which were competing in the 2017 Indian Premier League . RPS was captained for the season by Steve Smith and coached by Stephen Fleming . The team lost the final to Mumbai Indians by 1 run, which was the team's last game in the IPL.Pre-Season The RPS management axed MS Dhoni as captain and Steve Smith was appointed captain barely months before the start of the 2017 season. The franchise then changed their name to Rising Pune Supergiant , removing the 's', on 26 March 2017.Auction Indian Premier League was originally scheduled to be held in Bangalore on 4 February 2017 , but was pushed forward by at least two weeks due to the BCCI–Lodha committee stand-off. On 3 February , the BCCI announced that the auction will be held on 20 February in Bangalore and that a total of 799 players have signed up for it.
