RAJUK Uttara Model College


RAJUK Uttara Model College is a co-educational Bangladeshi secondary school situated at Uttara, Dhaka about a kilometre north from Shahjalal International Airport.
It was established in 1994. The school provides education to its students in Bengali and English version under the national curriculum. Students are admitted into the institution in sixth, ninth and eleventh grades. The school has around 6000 students and employs more than 200 teaching staff and more than 100 other staff.

History

RAJUK Uttara Model College was set up on an area of about at Uttara in 1994 under the control and management of the Ministry of Education. It was the absence of a truly standard educational institution in the area and the demand of the inhabitants that had led to the idea of founding an institution of very high standards in the newly built town. In order to meet the demand, the Ministry of Education established an educational institution in Uttara. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha '' provided land for the school.
The construction of the main academic building was completed in 1994 and the college section was formally inaugurated in the academic year 1994–95 by the former prime minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia. Due to acute shortage of infrastructural facilities, another development project for the construction of a new building was taken up in 1995 which was completed in two phases and the campus took its present shape in 2001.
The new campus of Rajuk Uttara Model College has been built in the same premises. It started its journey from 2014. It is a three-story building.
The school is under the control of an autonomous board of governors headed by the secretary, Ministry of Education. Although the school commenced with only one shift, later in 2003 a day shift was launched to cope with the growing number of students. The 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. schedule is morning shift and the 12:35 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. schedule is day shift.

Admission

Admission to RUMC is competitive. Applicants have to pass a written test and an oral test in order to qualify. Admission tests for the sixth grade is generally held in December and academic sessions begin in January. The admission procedure for the eleventh grade starts soon after the publication of the result of the Secondary School Certificate examination and admission is based on SSC examination result. Students securing less than GPA 5 on the scale of 5 in the SSC examinations are not even eligible to apply for admission in the science group.

Education

RUMC provides education to its students in the Secondary and Higher Secondary level in both Bengali and English version under the national curriculum. Students take Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate examinations and the Junior School Certificate . The school has an air-conditioned library with 15000 volumes along with physics, chemistry, computer, biology, geography labs for holding experiments. Arrangements are made for the bright students to participate in various merit based and sports contests.

Curriculum

This high school follows the national education curriculum of Bangladesh. The curriculum includes junior secondary, secondary and higher secondary school academic subjects. Students of grades 6 and 7 can take music and dance lessons along. Students of secondary can choose either science or business studies based on their performance in the JSC exam while the students of higher secondary classes can elect one of the three general streams: science, business studies and humanities on the basis of their grades in the SSC examination.
Students of grades 10 and 12 are prepared for their SSC and HSC examinations respectively. The eighth graders are prepared for their Junior School Certificate.

Academic performance

In 2008, the Dhaka Board of Education awarded this college for its performance in HSC examinations. RUMC also got the Best School award in the National Debate Festival 2008. RUMC has the best GPA-5 achievers' percentage in SSC exams amongst Dhaka schools.

Library

The college library has 15000 volumes. In addition to the material for studies, there is a collection of fiction, non-fiction and periodicals. Four books may be checked out at a time and they may be kept for a maximum period of two weeks. The library is open during and after academic hours and remains open up to 5:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m..

Administration

The college is governed by a governing body. The Secretary of the Ministry of Education is the chairman of the board of governors. The chief of the administration of college is Principal, while there is a Vice Principal in each of the versions and shifts and an additional Vice Principal for exam & coordination. The present Principal of the institution is Brigadier General Kazi Showkat Alam.

Campus

The RUMC campus has an area of, consisting of three buildings – two of them inter-connected, a sports ground and a pair of basketball courts. The first, second and third buildings are five stories, eight stories and three stories high respectively. The first five floors, excluding the ground floor of both inter-connected buildings are used for academic purposes. The Central Hall, gymnasium, teachers' lounge, administrative offices are on the ground floor. The library, principal's office, biology lab, video lab, computer lab 1 are located on the first floor. The second floor has physics lab, internet lab, computer labs 2 and 3, and classrooms.
The third floor consists of classrooms only. Chemistry lab and other classrooms are on the fourth floor. The fifth floor of the second building is used as living quarters for the principal and other staff. The dormitory for female students is located on this floor. Dormitories for resident male students are on the sixth and seventh floors. The playing ground is used for cricket, football, badminton, and handball.
Construction for the third building had started in July 2010. In January 2014, the English Medium school section was shifted to the newly made building at the other side of the playground, whose construction was delayed for some difficulties. The three-floored yet spacious building houses a number of forms ranging from grades 6–10, a common room and a canteen. The college section still continues to hold its classes in the older campus.

Uniform

All students wear college uniform.
Boys: White shirt and navy blue trousers white shirt and bottle green trousers, white shirt and brown trousers and white shirt and grey trousers. A necktie is compulsory during winter in addition to a pullover.
Girls: Navy blue frock, white pajamas and white dupatta ; bottle green frock, white pajamas and white dupatta ; brown frock, white pajamas and white dupatta and grey frock, white pajamas and white dupatta.
Epaulettes: Epaulettes are compulsory for all the students of RUMC. The epaulettes of school section and college section are red and green respectively. Students of grade 6 start their academic career in RUMC with single golden stripe and end their grade 10 with five golden stripes on their red epaulettes while the eleventh graders start with a golden stripe and end grade 12 with two golden stripes on their green epaulettes. epaulettes marked with stars and stripes are provided to the College Prefect, prefects and other appointment holders i.e. corporals and lance corporals

Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

There are 26 clubs and societies. The program includes football, cricket, volleyball, handball and basketball. Special emphasis is given on literary and cultural activities. A yearly cultural week is observed with Hamd, Nat, Quirat, debate, recitation, music, drama, story telling, and caricature.
Other clubs include stamp collection, drawing and painting, photography, gardening, pottery, band and junior cadet corps. A colourful wallpaper reflecting the thoughts and ideas of the students is brought out each term. Saturday was announced as club day or co-curricular activities day in 2016.
The college organizes an annual function on 21 February to observe the International Mother Language Day. It holds programs on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh, Independence Day, and Victory Day.

Sports

RUMC has outdoor and indoor games facilities. Inter-shift football, basketball, cricket, handball and other competitions are held.
RUMC has indoor games facilities including table tennis, carom, chess and word making. Boards needed for these indoor-games are placed in the college common room and hallways. RUMC has a vast football field with sufficient space and 2 goalposts. There is a basketball ground too, 2 courts are available there for girls and boys. The college also has a gymnasium for its students, equipped with exercise equipments, located on the ground floor of the main academic building. It remains open from 7:30am to 5:00pm.

School magazine

RUMC publishes an annual magazine containing poems, articles, stories, science fiction, and jokes, written by the students, teachers and staff. Anupranon অনুপ্রাণন is the name of the magazine.
