Prakash Sayami


Prakash Sayami is a Nepali film director, writer and producer. He is an independent film maker and he has directed six feature-length movies. He is currently working in Ujyaalo 90 Network programme Ajar Amar Geetharu. Sayami is also a film critic, media guru, and music promoter. Sayami has managed FM stations all over Nepal, and has conceptualized and presented television shows.
From 1986, he worked as an assistant director and scriptwriter on many commercial Nepali films. He made his directorial debut in 1993. In 2008, Prakash Sayami was elected as Vice-President of the Music Royalty society of Nepal which aims to protect musician's copyrights nationally and internationally. Sayami studied film making in Bombay.
As a writer, he has written 11 books in Nepali and English namely Chalchitra kala ra pravidi, Barshadi Dinharoo, Kathmandu Selfie, Nepali Sangeet ko Ek Shatak, Sangeet ko Swarnim Yug, Film Nirman ra Nirdeshan, Ghalib ko Chihan,Ananta Yatra Ee Salai ka kati haru, Sanskaran, Ray: the Man of Cinema. He also directed six Nepali and one Maithali movies- Prithivi, Simana, Avatar, Ranikhola, Zamin and Hatiyar, Hansa Chalal Pardesh. He has recorded Nepali poems which can be found in Anjali CD Album and has brought out the collection of songs of movies called Awaj Haru.
He is also the founder of Shubharambha The Musical Journey. He also produced and directed musical program in Nepal called Ajambari Geet Sangeet in Radio Sagarmatha 102.4 MZH from 2002 to 2004. He also established Radio Annapurna in Pokhara in 2000, Kalika FM in Chitwan in 2008. He ran a talk show in Channel Nepal, the first private television on music and cinema.
In 2014, he was honored with the Universal Peace Federation acknowledge as Ambassadors for Peace.
He also penned few songs for the debut album of Udit Naraya Jha called Jhilimili under the music direction of Eugene Lama. He also penned songs for the music album of Udit Narayan Jha and Deepa Jha called Upahar.
He speaks Nepali, Nepalbhasa, English, Hindi fluently.

Early life and education

Sayami was born on 21 March 1965, in Kathmandu in a Hindu family. After finishing college, he left home to come to Bombay as a student of film. He studied script writing and film direction Indian People's Theatre Association, and subsequently earned a diploma.. As a student, he got involved drama and plays in Royal Nepal Academy. During his stay in Bombay now Mumbai, he got opportunity to learn from Basu Bhattacharya, Sagar Sarahadi, Waman Kendre. He assisted Basu Bhattacharya in his film Panchawati made in Hindi. He also assisted Ramesh Pandey in his Bhojpuri films- Dhagabaj Balma, Sas, Nanad, Bhouj.
Early interest in cinema
Sen's interest in films started after he stumbled upon a book on film aesthetics. However, his interest remained mostly intellectual, and he was forced to take up the job of a medical representative, which took him away from Calcutta. This did not last very long, and he came back to the city and eventually took a job as an audio technician in a Calcutta film studio, which launched his film career.

Directorial debut

Prakash Sayami made his first feature film, Prithivi, in 1994. It had the iconic Rajesh Hamal who was not a star then. The movie was hit. His next film, Simana, earned him local recognition. He launched actor Simanta Udas and Jol Shah in Avatar.
