Plaza del Carmen Mall

Plaza del Carmen Mall is a two-story enclosed shopping mall in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

History

Plaza del Carmen Mall has been opened to the public since the 1970. During the 1980s, it hosted such stores and establishments as a González Padín department store, Western Auto, Kay Bee Toys, a video game arcade and a music store. Amigo Supermarkets opened their first location in Caguas at Plaza del Carmen Mall in 1989.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, despite the opening of the Amigo Supermarkets store, the mall looked desolated. This was in part due to Gonzalez Padin's closing of their location at the mall, which was followed by other stores. However, the mall has been able to rebound economically.
Plaza del Carmen Mall had at different times hosted some of Puerto Rico's most popular television shows, particularly more so during the early 1980s, when Tommy Muniz broadcast some of his shows on Canal 7 live from the mall. More recently, early in 2014, WAPA-TV's El Tiempo Es Oro was shown live from Plaza del Carmen Mall.
Due to the year of its opening Plaza del Carmen Mall was once one of the three largest malls in Puerto Rico, smaller only to Plaza Las Americas in San Juan, Plaza Carolina in Carolina and later to San Patricio Plaza in Guaynabo. Now ranks among the smallest malls in the island.
The Subway restaurant at Plaza del Carmen closed after it was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, and reopened in August 2018.
The Fallas Discount Stores closed In early 2019, no plans have been made to replace the anchor space.
