Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda


Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda is a historical Buddhist stupa located in Lewe Township, Naypyidaw Union Territory, Myanmar.

Location

The stupa is in "Myo-Gone Village" of "U -Yin-Zu Village", 2 miles southwest of LeweTownship. It is near Pyinmana - Taungdwingyi Railway Road and east of Yangon-Mandalay New Highway Road.

Design

The stupa is caved type and contains 3-Watch Terrace. An ancient stupa called "Moe-Kaung Pagoda" near Phaung Taw Oo stupa.

History

The stupa was named because of King Alaungsithu in the Burmese year of 475-524. During his reign in Bangan Era, he wandered out to the land by Royal Berg and erected a stupa by Royal Barge, calling it Paung Taw Oo Pagoda.
The site was the primary place where Mg-Ngwet was established around the Burmese year of 191. The ancient town was about 1050 feet long from east to west and about 840 feet wide from north to south. Each wall of the town was 15 feet high and a moat around the High-Wall was displayed. The shape of the walls of ancient villages can be found nearby the stupa area.
Antique items have been found along Palway Creek near the stupa. The creek flows through Lewe Township from West to East and joins the Paung-Long river near Yone-Bin Village. A wooden carved boat was found there in the 1980s and displayed to the public near the stupa land.
On 15 January 2013, another ancient canoe 8 feet long with 65 paddles was recovered in the creek near the Thit-Taw village. On 29 September 2017, an ancient 58 foot wooden boat was salvaged in the creek near Thayetkon-Chaunggwa Village. The last boat was seemed the largest.

Donors

Sayadaw U Dama and Kon-Nga-Yar-Khaing Sayadaw were donors who maintained Phaung Taw Oo pagoda.
The Hta-Ma-Nhae-Pwe festival is celebrated in Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda on Full Moon Day of the Burmese month "Tapotwe" annually.
