Paul Nash (musician)


Paul Nash was an American jazz guitarist and composer.

History

Nash was born in New York City. He played in rock bands as a teenager but turned to jazz after attending a festival in 1968 which featured Sunny Murray and Archie Shepp. He attended Berklee College of Music and then Mills College in San Francisco, where he founded his own ensemble, recorded for Revelation, and helped found the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra. He returned to New York in the 1980s and founded the Manhattan New Music Project. He also worked with the city, planning performances of jazz ensembles in public parks. He composed for jazz and classical ensembles, and recorded many of his own works; his sidemen on recordings include Tom Harrell, Mark Isham, Art Lande, Dave Samuels, and Jack Walrath. He died at the age of 57 in New York.
