Operail

AS Operail is a railway logistics company located in Tallinn, Estonia. Its sole shareholder is the Government of Estonia.

History

EVR Cargo was established as a freight transportation subsidiary of Eesti Raudtee in 2009. In 2012, it was legally separated from Eesti Raudtee. In 2018 the company was renamed Operail.
In 2018, the company together with the railway companies of Latvia and Lithuania signed an agreement to establish the Amber Train freight transportation route from Šeštokai through Riga to Tallinn. In the same year, it rebuilt in collaboration with CZ Loko in its Tapa depot the first GE C30-7Ai locomotive to C30-M. Original frames and bogies were supplemented by a new centrally-positioned driver's cab and a 1.55 MW Caterpillar 3512C HD diesel engine. In April 2019, Operail announced that it would suspend wagon repairs and concentrate instead on locomotive construction at Tapa depot.
The Government of Estonia is planning to sell 49% of the shares of the company.

Operations

In 2018, Operail transported 13.4 million tonnes of freight: mainly fertilizers, mineral fuels, and oil shale. Its operating income was €72.7 million, with a net profit of €9.2 million.
