Nasir Aslam Wani


Nasir Aslam Wani, is a politician of Jammu and Kashmir and belongs to National Conference party. He has served the State as the Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Housing & Urban Development, PHE, Revenue & Relief and later taking on responsibility for the Home department as an additional portfolio.
Nasir Aslam Wani is presently the Provincial President of National Conference for Kashmir.
Nasir Aslam Wani is the grandson of a Legendary politician, then Cabinet Minister and MLA Lolab, Late Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami.
He contested elections in 2008 from Amirakadal Constituency, the main Business, Commercial and Educational hub of summer capital Srinagar.

Political career

Nasir Aslam Wani was involved with various NGO’s for social work namely healthcare education of the poor and orphaned children; worked for distribution of relief material during earthquake damage in Uri etc. He Joined Youth National Conference in 1998 and was nominated as Central Secretary; worked as provincial Secretary of Kashmir Province and also member of Central Working Committee of J&K National Conference.
He was second in command when Omar Abdullah rose to the top ranks of Youth national Conference before taking over as the charge as president of the Grand Old Party in 2001. YNC was then just Omar and Nasir and it was never revived. Nasir, descendant of an influential political family earlier concentrated on Lolab Valley.

Amirakadal Constituency

At Amirakadal, Nasir polled 3922 votes against 3103 of his rival Parvez Ahmad of PDP. None of the 27 other candidates could get more than 1000 votes in the constituency where a high profile Amreen Badar of Congress polled only 407 votes.

Ministry

Elected as member of J&K Legislative Assembly in 2008 General Elections from Amirakadal Constituency; inducted in the Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Omar Abdullah as Minister of State for Housing & Urban Development, PHE, Tourism and Revenue & Relief on 11-07-2009

Home Ministry

Nasir was given the charge of Home Department under government order number 490. Omar Abdullah said, "I’ve full faith on Nasir’s abilities and he will deliver. As I’m taking care of number of portfolios and am over burdened with work, I decided to handover home ministry charge to Nasir." "There was urgent need to hand over the charge of minister of state for home to some one and I decided to hand over the responsibility to Nasir," said Omar.
Immediately after taking over new portfolio, Nasir Aslam Wani was asked how he would curb human rights violations in the state, replying, "We will change the image of police force and make it more public friendly."
