Maragato (Brazil)

Maragato is a name given in Brazil to those who initiated the Riograndense Revolution of 1893 in protest against the federal government represented in the province by Júlio Prates de Castilhos.
They wore red neckerchiefs for identification. The name Maragato came from the fact that their leaders had been in exile in a region of Uruguay heavily populated by emigrants from La Maragatería in Spain.
