MIA Design Cell

The idea was proposed in 2004 by lecturer Vinod J Nair who lectured in the Graphic Design department from 2002 to 2010. The proposal was approved by then CEO and President Mr. Choong Kam Kow. The design cell went on to standardize an uplift the design output for the promotional material, internal publications and take on industry related projects. The cell informally headed by Vinod J Nair would champion the rebranding—refinement of the existing logo and signage—and later the rebranding of the exterior and interior of the main campus located on Jalan Bandar 11, Taman Melawati.
The rebranding would include interiors and exteriors of the building. The renovation was headed by the Interior Design department lecturers, Ms. Ooi Ai Eng and Mr. Sundaresan Shanmugam, the old building was transformed and updated, adapting a more open and brutalist finish. The entire rebranding and renovation project was overseen by Dr. M. Y Chan, the then treasurer on the board of directors, who played a pivotal role in convincing the board to allocate funds, for the rebranding and renovation.
The rebranding project that was initiated by the cell would coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Malaysian Institute of Arts. A book chronicling the 40 years of history was designed by the cell in consultation with Dr. M. Y. Chan, who worked closely with Vinod J. Nair and Khaw Zhen Wei.
The MIA Design Cell was initially an independent informal department under the direct supervision of the then president Mr. Choong Kam Kow. It was later integrated into the marketing department after the departure of lecturer Mr. Vinod J Nair and then President Mr. Choong Kam Kow.
Designers: Vinod J Nair 2004-2009, Khaw Zhen Wei 2006-2007, Lim Boon Ching 2007-2008.

The planning and execution phase was supervised by the then president and CEO Mr. Choong Kam Kow. The lab was officiated in 2005. Mr. Ee Kok Wei played an important role in introduction of Information Technology, championing and then equipping lecturers with their own machines thereby transforming much of the dated methods of teaching and learning preparation and delivery in MIA.
