Luggenemenener

Luggenemenener was a Tasmanian Aborigine woman who was captured by John Batman in the Ben Lomond district of north-east Tasmania in September 1829. Batman sent Luggenemenener to Campbell Town gaol and kept her two-year-old son, Rolepana "...whom she had faced death to protect." Batman kept the child so he could rear him himself, and took him to settle Port Phillip where he subsequently died in Melbourne in 1842.
Luggenemenener had another son, Walter George Arthur, who was born at Ben Lomond, his father, Rolepa, was an important Ben Lomond Chief. Walter died in a night-time boating accident on the Derwent River on 21 May 1861. A third son, Maulboyheener also died in Melbourne.
Luggenemenener was sent to the Flinders Island settlement of Wybellena, with the remnants of the Tasmanian Tribes, where she died on 21 March 1837. She was called Queen Charlotte by George Augustus Robinson.
