On 11 September 2011, LRT confirmed Lithuania's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, although the broadcaster struggled with financial problems. Additionally, the Lithuanian head of Delegation, Audrius Girzadas, has not excluded the possibility of selecting next year's national representative in Eurovision internally, given the financial difficulties LRT is going through.

Format

On 6 November 2011, LRT announced more details on their national selection. Four semi-finals were aired and the top three from each semi-final advanced to the final. The results of the semi-finals were determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from a jury panel and public televoting. The voting of the jury was aired live. The winning song in the final was selected over two rounds of voting: the first round results were determined by the 50/50 combination from a jury panel and public televoting, while the second round was determined solely by the jury panel.
The Lithuanian representative in Baku was awarded 15,000 litai. The runner-up won 10,000 litai, while the third place finisher received 5,000 litai.

Entries can be submitted to LRT between 14 October 2011 and 2 January 2012. Songs published before 1 September were not eligible to enter the selection, and the acts can not feature more than six people on stage. 36 songs were chosen from the received submissions to compete at the selection.
