List of North American Numbering Plan area codes

The North American Numbering Plan divides the regions of its member nations into geographic numbering plan areas. Each area is assigned a three-digit area code which is prefixed to each telephone number issued in its service area. Some areas are assigned multiple codes in an overlay plan.
The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 as the leading digit, which also applies for central office codes. 0 has been used traditionally for operator-assisted telephone calls, and the digit 1 was traditionally ignored in switching equipment as a leading digit, because it could not be distinguished reliably from intermittent loop disconnections. NPAs with 9 as the second digit are reserved for future format expansion. Area codes with identical two trailing digits, such as 322 and 800, are considered easily recognizable codes, of which the series 8xx is used for toll-free services.

  • is the only area code in North America that serves as both the sole area code for one geographic area while simultaneously overlaying the entire geographic region of a different area code
  • 2002, all remaining 321 NXX codes were frozen so that all future 321 NXXs will serve Brevard County exclusively, including Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie, Melbourne and Titusville.
  • was originally assigned as the relief area code for Chicago's 312; however, it was reassigned to this part of Florida after a successful petition, led by local resident Robert Osband, to commemorate the Space Coast's impact on Brevard County
  • As of 2019, 321 numbers were no longer being assigned to customers located in the geographic area served by 407, and previously assigned 321 numbers for this area were being "reabsorbed" as customers terminated service. These numbers will, at some point in the future, be reassigned to customers living in the Gold Coast region of Florida so that eventually, 321 will exclusively serve Florida's Gold Coast.
