Lake Zumpango
Lake Zumpango was an endorheic lake formerly located in the Valley of Mexico. It was important area for Mesoamerican cultural development in central Mexico.
The endorheic basin located in the north of State of Mexico, in the borough of municipality of Zumpango and bordering the municipality of Teoloyucan in the State of Mexico.
Lake Zumpango and the other Mexican great lakes formed the ancient Basin of Mexico lake system. These lakes were home to many Mesoamerican cultures including the Toltecs and the Aztecs.
Lake Zumpango was the original habitat of the axolotl, an amphibian which is now critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild due to urban destruction.
