In 2016 Gezahegn won three marathon competitions in China. In Chongqing., Hengshui and Hefei.
In 2017 he improved his personal best at the Rotterdam Marathon when he became sixth in 2:07:29 h and in October when he finished as second in 2:06:55 at the Frankfurt Marathon.
In 2018 again he could improve his personal best at the Rotterdam Marathon now in 2:05:56 h finishing as third. He won the marathons in Lanzhou in 2:11:00 h and the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:06:37 h
In 2020 he won the Houston Marathon with a time of 2:08:36.
