KRIB


KRIB is a radio station licensed to serve Mason City, Iowa. The station is owned by Alpha Media. It airs an Adult Standards music format. KRIB was one of the first radio stations in Iowa to play Rock and Roll in the mid-1950s and garnered all of the young audience. KRIB is also the radio station that was one of the sponsors of the Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa in February 1959 featuring The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly, which ended that evening with all three dying in a plane crash just north of the Mason City airport. The concert was M.C.'d by Bob Hale a disc jockey at KRIB at the time. KRIB still changes their music format during the week anniversary of the Winter Dance Party to play all of the hit songs of the late 1950s and early 1960s with an emphasis on the songs from February 1959.
The station was assigned these call letters by the Federal Communications Commission.
