Jody Mills


Jody Mills is a fictional character on the American drama television series Supernatural. She is portrayed by Kim Rhodes.
She is one of the longest-running recurring characters on the show and has appeared in every season since her introduction. Jody is one of the stars of the season thirteen episode titled "Wayward Sisters," a backdoor pilot for a proposed spin-off series of the same name.

Storylines

Jody is from Bobby Singer's hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Being the town's sheriff, she originally had quite a hostile relationship with "town drunk" Bobby. However, when the town's deceased, including Jody’s son and Bobby's wife, rise in season five’s "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," this changes her perspective on him. She attempts to prevent Sam and Dean Winchester from investigating, but when her zombified son, Owen, kills her husband, Sean, she works with Sam to kill the remaining zombies.
In the season six episode "Weekend at Bobby's," Jody shows up with an FBI agent looking for Rufus Turner. She attempts to distract the agent and later in the episode extradites Rufus so he can escape custody and assist Bobby in retrieving his soul.
In season seven, Jody is recovering from an appendectomy in Sioux Falls General in "Hello, Cruel World" when the Leviathans take control. She informs Bobby and he rescues her. In "Slash Fiction," Jody accidentally and unintentionally aids Bobby into discovering the one thing that brings severe harm to the Leviathans. Meanwhile, she also starts developing an attraction toward Bobby. She later contacts the Winchesters in "Time After Time" to warn them about supernatural killings she's gotten wind of and teams up with Sam to bring Dean back to the present. She is referred to in "There Will Be Blood" when Sam and Dean give her number to a girl named Emily who was kidnapped by vampires twelve years before, telling her to call Jody if they don't come back and that Jody would take care of her.
In season eight’s "Sacrifice," Jody goes on a date with what she thinks is a man named Roderick, but is actually Crowley. He reminds her of her dead son and husband and she starts crying and goes into the bathroom to calm down. Crowley casts a spell to make her start choking on her own blood, threatening her life in order to force Sam and Dean to agree to a deal: stop the trials and exchange the demon tablet for the angel tablet. Once they agree and surrender, Crowley lets Jody live.
Jody returns in the season nine episode "Rock and a Hard Place" where she calls Sam and Dean about a bunch of mysterious disappearances of virgins in Hartford, South Dakota. She works the case with Sam and figures out that they are dealing with Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth. Jody helps Sam figure out where the kidnapped Dean is and when they need the blood of a virgin to kill Vesta, Jody punches one in the nose to get the blood when she refuses to help. During the confrontation with Vesta, Jody uses her knowledge of the goddess' true nature to catch her off guard and tries to kill her while she is distracted. Jody fails and is non-fatally wounded thanks to Sam, but kills Vesta from behind while she is distracted talking to Sam. Sam and Jody rescue Dean and the other surviving victims and Jody, who has her arm in a sling from her injury, thanks Sam and Dean before leaving. In "Alex Annie Alexis Ann," Jody saves a young woman named Alex from a vampire and calls Sam and Dean for help. Knowing there will be more vampires coming for Alex, Jody takes Alex to her family cabin to protect her while Sam and Dean hunt the nest. That night, Dean calls Jody to warn her about Alex and the fact that the nest are coming, but it is too late as the vampires arrive, having beaten the location out of Jody's deputy Frank. They knock Jody out and flee back to their nest in Nebraska. In the morning Sam and Dean return and warn Jody that Alex acts a lure for victims for the nest and that they intent to raid the nest and kill all the vampires, Alex included if needed. Jody insists on going with them and at the nest finds Alex who has been turned into a vampire. Jody is knocked out by the "mother" of the "family" of vampires, Celia, who tries to get Alex to feed on her. Jody, admitting that she sees Alex as a way to deal with her family's loss, realizes that Celia kidnapped Alex for similar reasons: she lost a daughter of her own and tried to replace her. Celia admits it, but tries to kill Jody. Jody is saved by Alex who injects Celia with dead man's blood. Telling Alex to turn away, Jody decapitates Celia and is joined by Sam and Dean who took care of the other vampires. As Alex didn't feed, Sam and Dean are able to cure her and Jody decides to take care of Alex as she has no family left. Jody promises to be there for Alex and offers understanding at Alex having lost her whole family, having gone through it herself, something Alex understands and acknowledges.
In "Hibbing 911" of season ten, Jody, who has adopted a rebellious Alex, goes to a sheriff's retreat in Hibbing, Minnesota where she meets overeager Sheriff Donna Hanscum of Stillwater, Minnesota who becomes her partner for the weekend and neither one knows of the other’s connection to the Winchesters. Jody becomes aware of mysterious deaths where all of a victim is consumed but their bones and after alerting Sam and Dean, tries to investigate without getting Donna involved. However, Donna sees another sheriff, Len Cues over another victim and learns the truth along with the fact that they are dealing with vampires. Sam, Dean, Jody and Donna team up take down the vampires who are revealed to have been taught to consume everything of a victim. Dean kills most of the vampires but one goes after Jody. Donna saves her and kills the vampire, impressing Jody. In the aftermath, Jody promises to teach Donna how to hunt, an idea she likes.
Jody eventually returns in the season eleven episode "Don't You Forget About Me," where she continues to look after Alex and now Claire Novak, who frustrates Jody by seeing hunts everywhere when there is none. To Jody's shock, Claire proves to be right about a possible hunt in town, what turns out to be a vampire seeking revenge against Alex. Jody, Claire and Alex are kidnapped and nearly killed, but Sam and Dean rescue them and Dean and Claire kill the two vampires. Jody injures her leg again the process and is cooked breakfast by Claire and Alex who finally start to bond over the experience. Claire later tells Dean that Jody has promised to teach her how to hunt properly and she now understands what she has with Jody: a real family.
In "Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox" in season twelve, Jody is enjoying a day off while Claire and Alex are at a concert when the Winchesters drop by for a visit on their way home from a hunt. Jody then gets a call that Asa Fox, a hunter she was in a relationship with, is dead and travels with the Winchesters to Canada for his wake. Jody is shocked to discover that Mary Winchester is alive and offers Dean some advice on how to handle the situation. When the sadistic Crossroads Demon Jael starts killing hunters, he possesses Jody and reveals that she had fantasized about a life with Asa and that Asa's best friend Bucky killed him. As Jael focuses on Bucky, the other hunters perform an exorcism on Jael in sequence as he takes out each one after a few lines. Finally, Jael is exorcised from Jody and sent back to Hell. Jody survives the possession and exorcism and the next morning offers Mary advice mother to mother on dealing with her sons.
In "Who We Are," Jody is targeted by the British Men of Letters in their operation to wipe out all American hunters. To this end, they send a brainwashed Mary Winchester to kill an unaware Jody. After escaping Arthur Ketch's trap, the Winchesters contact Jody to learn that she has not only survived Mary's attack, but captured their mother thanks to the timely return of Alex allowing Jody to overpower Mary. Jody does her best to comfort the distressed Winchesters about Mary's state and helps organize several hunters to assault the British Men of Letters base, including Walt and Roy, two hunters who had once murdered Sam and Dean. After sending Alex to safety with Donna, Jody joins the assault team. Sam starts the battle by crashing Jody's police truck through the front gate of the British compound as the British Men of Letters prepare to launch an all-out attack on the American hunters and their families. Jody survives the fight that follows, killing a few British operatives in combat. Alongside Sam and Walt, Jody confronts British Men of Letters Elder Doctor Hess who attempts to convince Sam that the two groups still need to work together due to the threat of Lucifer. When Sam refuses, Doctor Hess tries to kill Sam only to have Jody shoot her in the head. The surviving hunters evacuate the compound and destroy it, ending the British Men of Letters operation in America.
In season 13's "Patience," Dean calls Jody for backup while Sam is dealing with Lucifer's Nephilim son Jack. The two go to the aid of Missouri Moseley, a powerful psychic and old Winchester ally who lost a friend to a Wraith that is targeting psychics. Missouri sends Dean and Jody to protect her granddaughter Patience Turner, also a powerful psychic and they are distressed to learn that Missouri was subsequently murdered. Jody helps in the hunt for the Wraith, which results in her death in a premonition Patience has. Patience warns Jody in time for her to avoid being killed and Dean kills the Wraith with Jody's silver knife. Afterwards, though Dean encourages Patience to choose a normal life, Jody encourages the girl to make her own choices and offers her card in case Patience ever needs her help.
After Jack's disappearance, the Winchesters are mentioned to have gotten Jody to put out an APB on him. Subsequently in "The Bad Place," Jody contacts them with news of a boy who was spotted near the murder of a man named Derek Swan who matches Jack's description. Dean later calls Jody for information on Kaia Nieves and Jody gets worried when she doesn't hear from the Winchesters for awhile. She is surprised when Patience arrives with the news that she has had a vision and something terrible is coming.
In "Wayward Sisters," the backdoor pilot for the proposed spinoff Supernatural: Wayward Sisters, Jody contacts Claire to let her know that the Winchesters are on a hunting trip and she hasn't heard from them in a few days. As a result, Jody asks Claire to return to help find them. With the help of Alex, Jody searches for the Winchesters and Kaia through other hunters and hospital records with no luck. Patience reveals that her vision if of Claire's death, ending with her cradled in a crying Jody's arms. Jody arrives at the hospital in time to help Claire take down a monster targeting Kaia and performs an autopsy, only to discover the creature to be unlike anything she has ever seen before. Kaia finally admits that the creatures are from an alternate reality known as The Bad Place and she had been trying to help the Winchesters open a door to another world but something went wrong. The group realizes that the presence of the creature means that the door is still open and flee after Patience gets a vision of more of the creatures attacking.
Jody calls in Donna for backup, intending to leave Claire behind to protect her. With the help of Kaia, the group tracks the rift between the worlds to a nearby abandoned shipyard and Jody goes in alone with Donna, leaving the girls behind. After locating the rift, they are cornered by another creature, but rescued by Claire. With the rift closing, Jody reluctantly allows Claire to pass through with Kaia while Jody stays behind with Donna, Alex and Patience to defend the rift from more of the creatures. Together, they manage to kill all of the creatures and Claire returns with the Winchesters moments before the rift closes. Jody is devastated to learn that Kaia didn't make it and comforts Claire, the true unexpected outcome of Patience's vision. The next morning, the Winchesters warn Jody that the rift was open for a few days and more creatures may have made it through in that time. Jody reassures them that her family can handle protecting Sioux Falls while they focus on the world. After the Winchesters leave, Jody, Donna, Alex and Patience clean up her house and are joined by Claire for a family dinner, unaware that Kaia's killer, Kaia's alternate reality self, has arrived through another rift.
