Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga is an Indian soap opera about a poor boy, Akash, and rich girl, Angana, who fall in love and get married. Akash is forced to be a ghar jamai or live-in son-in-law to Angana's parents. This is because of a peculiar tradition in Angana's family, but the self-respecting Akash feels humiliated by it. The title relates to a popular song, "Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga," sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. The show started on 27 February 2012. In this serial theme song "ek dil banaaya,phir pyar basaaya" was sung by Udit Narayan and Mahalakshmi Iyer ; another theme song "Ek dil toota idhar bhi, koi apna rootha udhar bhi" was sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam and the song "ek dil mein mohabbat idhar bhi,chahat ki jaroorat udhar bhi" was also rendered by Udit and Sadhana. All these numbers were penned by Raghvendra Singh and he was nominated in Indian Television Academy Awards, 2013 for the Best Lyrics category.
Plot
A doting mother, Kalyani Devi Raichand, gets her three daughters married to men who move in with her family instead of taking their wives away to their homes. Kalyani's wealthy family follows a unique custom of getting bridegrooms to move in with the brides and their parents, instead of the other way around. So, when Kalyani and Raghuveer Raichand's youngest daughter Angana decides to marry Akash Sharma, the family tradition and history have to repeat themselves. Under the pressure of circumstances, Akash has to bid farewell to his family and become a ghar jamai at the Raichands' place. The young couple goes through many trials and tribulations. But, at last, Akash wins respect from everyone in Angana's family, including the hard-to-please Kalyani. Just as everything seems to be falling into place, tragedy strikes. Akash dies, leaving Angana shell-shocked. Soon after, the Raichands come in contact with the Chauhan family, whose middle son, Saumya, is a divorcee with two small children. The children take a great liking to Angana, and she feels revived in their company. This makes the Chauhans and the Raichands think that Angana and Saumya can be the perfect spouses for one another. Under pressure from the two families, Angana and Saumya enter a loveless marriage. Angana starts living at the Chauhan house. Within a few days, she discovers that she is pregnant with Akash's child. Saumya is shocked, but decides to stand by Angana and accept her child as his own. The couple has to face a tricky situation when the Chauhan family learns of Angana's pregnancy. During Soumya's brother Tejas's wedding, the family comes to know the truth but they accept the child as their own. Love blossoms between Soumya and Angana just then Soumya's exwife Angana an alcoholic comes on their way. After knowing the truth Angana brings Angie home. Angie starts progressing and comes out of the habit. Charu then hatches a plan about bringing Soumya and Angie together. Soumya's friend Sameer return from London. At last everything is good and Angie marries Sameer. After few months Angana gives birth to a baby boy who is named Akash.
The show gained a poor reception on its release. Kshama Rao of The Indian Express expressed her disappointment saying, "The show had an interesting premise of daughters staying back at their parents' home while their husbands come to them. It could have been a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek look at the concept of ghar jamais but then we are talking Barjatyas here, for them to even endorse such a thought is sacrilege. Sigh!" However, the situation is beginning to change as the show has garnered the attention of a section of the male audience.
