Holmes' love of the game of baseball came early in his life when he watched a black baseball team practice near his home - “they were a fast and young team and had two of the best colored pitchers I ever seen”.
Herbert started playing baseball in high school as a pitcher for the 558 Tigers in 1928. He then played in the Highland League for the Mohawk Cubs. In early 1936, he became Manager and Shortstop for the Boston Monarchs and was voted Most Valuable Player. He would later go on to play for the Philadelphia Giants and The Wolverines until Spring 1939 when he joined the Boston Royal Giants. He also played for the Boston Nighthawks, traveling around the New England area playing exhibition games.Gallery
