Grosse Isle, Manitoba
Grosse Isle is a small rural community 20 minutes north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is partly in the Rural Municipality of Rosser and partly in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood.
Grosse Isle has a heritage site with a school, train station, church, prairie home, concessions, and picnic spaces.
It is the seasonal destination of the Prairie Dog Central Railway, operated by The Vintage Locomotive Society Inc. It's an attraction that brings people together not only from the city but locally too.
This town is all about volunteering and is really based on that sense of community. There are local dinners put on at the Community Center and there are some events where the people who come in on the train can stay for a dinner and dessert. There are usually some animals and other market stands at the train where you can buy trinkets and foods.
In 2014 the Western TV show The Pinkertons was filmed entirely in Grosse Isle and even used local houses and barns for most scenes. Even some community members got involved, contributing animals and appearing in the background.
