Grancy


Grancy is a municipality of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, located in the district of Morges.

History

Grancy is first mentioned in 1141 as Granci. In 1202 it was mentioned as Grantie.

Geography

Grancy has an area,, of. Of this area, or 68.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 26.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 4.7% is settled, or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes and or 0.2% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. Out of the forested land, 24.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.6% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 59.1% is used for growing crops and 7.6% is pastures, while 1.4% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.
The municipality was part of the Cossonay District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Grancy became part of the new district of Morges.
The municipality is located along the banks of the Veyron river. It consists of the village of Grancy and the hamlet of Saint-Denis.

Demographics

Grancy has a population of. , 6.3% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has changed at a rate of 15.8%. It has changed at a rate of 11.1% due to migration and at a rate of 4.7% due to births and deaths.
Most of the population speaks French, with German being second most common and English being third. There are 2 people who speak Italian and 2 people who speak Romansh.

Politics

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the FDP which received 28.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP, the SP and the Green Party. In the federal election, a total of 117 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 47.0%.

Economy

, Grancy had an unemployment rate of 3.5%. , there were 30 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 9 businesses involved in this sector. 15 people were employed in the secondary sector and there were 4 businesses in this sector. 34 people were employed in the tertiary sector, with 7 businesses in this sector. In the 2009/2010 school year there were a total of 52 students in the Grancy school district. In the Vaud cantonal school system, two years of non-obligatory pre-school are provided by the political districts. During the school year, the political district provided pre-school care for a total of 631 children of which 203 children received subsidized pre-school care. The canton's primary school program requires students to attend for four years. There were 27 students in the municipal primary school program. The obligatory lower secondary school program lasts for six years and there were 25 students in those schools.
