Germany participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and selected their entry in a series of competitive heats and a national final Unser Star für Baku, which was organised jointly by the public broadcasters ARD and NDR and the private television channel ProSieben. Roman Lob represented Germany with the song "Standing Still", which placed 8th in the final, scoring 110 points.
On 23 May 2011, three time Eurovision producer and host of Eurovision 2011, Stefan Raab, officially announced his resignation from his roles in the German Eurovision selection as host, producer, mentor and jury president, but his support for the German Eurovision artist still remained. He was replaced by Thomas Dürr, better known as Thomas D, singer of the German hip hop band Die Fantastischen Vier. On 25 November 2011, ARD announced several changes in the national selection. Sandra Rieß and Steven Gätjen replaced Matthias Opdenhövel and Sabine Heinrich as the hosts. The final of Unser Star für Baku took place on 16 February 2012. Furthermore, instead of having guest judges on each show, Thomas D. was accompanied by two further constant judges, Alina Süggeler, lead singer of the band Frida Gold, and Stefan Raab despite his resignation from further involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest. A unique voting system was introduced. The public could already vote for the candidates while they were presented - intermediate results were presented on screen to the viewer and in the studio to candidates, judges and hosts during the show. The singer, who had the fewest votes then, perform first and had therefore the longest time to convince with their talent.

The final took place on 16 February 2012. The two finalists: Roman Lob and Ornella de Santis performed a total of three songs: two songs internally selected by ARD, "Alone" and "Standing Still", as well as another individual song. There was a total of two voting rounds. The song for each singer was determined in the first round, while the final winner was selected in the second round. Roman Lob was the winner with the song "Standing Still", with de Santis coming in second place with her individual song "Quietly".
At Eurovision
As a Big Five member, Germany was automatically qualified for the final, held on 26 May. Roman Lob was awarded 110 points in total and finished in 8th place.

In the Final Germany came 8th with 110 points: the public awarded Germany 6th place with 125 points and the jury awarded 10th place with 98 points.
