FitzAlan

FitzAlan is an English surname of Breton origin. In the aftermath of the Norman conquest of England, a number of Breton nobles and knights settled in Britain. The FitzAlan family shared a common patrilinear ancestry with the House of Stuart, the Scottish, and later English, royal dynasty. Therefore, they are also related to the current British royal family. They are descendants of the Breton knight Alan fitz Flaad, grandson of the Seneschal of the Bishop of Dol.
The FitzAlans held the Earldom of Arundel from 1267 to 1580.
Variants of this surname include Fitz-Alan, Fitzalan, Fitzallen, and Fitz Alan. Commonly used locational variants include Arundel and Arundell. The earldom granted to William of Northumberland, a possession which the latter had sought from the English king, was possibly the cause of their first estrangement.
