Ed Chau


Edwin Pun Chau is an American politician currently serving in the California State Assembly. He is a Democrat representing the 49th state assembly District, which encompasses the western San Gabriel Valley.
Chau was born in Hong Kong in 1957 and grew up in Los Angeles. He has a BA in sociology and a BS in computer science from the University of Southern California. He received a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law.
Chau is a member of the California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Prior to being elected to the Assembly in 2012, he was a Montebello Unified School District trustee from 2000 to 2012. In addition to being an attorney who owns his own law firm, he has been an engineer for IBM and a computer programmer.
In 2008, Chau ran unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives in the 42nd congressional district, losing to Gary Miller.
In 2018 he introduced the California Consumer Privacy Act alongside Robert Hertzberg.
