Dorud


Dorud is a city in and capital of Dorud County, Lorestan Province, Iran. At the 2011 census, its population was 174,508 in 50,140 families, and it's the biggest city in Lorestan after Borujerd and Khorramabad. The name Dorud means "where two rivers meet", where "do" means two, and "rud" means river.
Dorud is one of the cities of Lorestan province and the capital city of Dorud. Dorud is the third most populous city of Lorestan. Dorud is located in the range of the Zagros Mountains and beside Oshtorankuh. Two branches of the river Dez, one of the north and one of the east surround Dorud.
Dorud is nicknamed "the Natural Capital of Iran", due to its many natural attractions, including Oshtorankuh, Mount Pariz, Gahar Lake, Babahur, Azgan wetland, river Sepidab, mount Qarun and Aznadar, Talezang, Abgar and Chekan waterfalls.
Following the construction of the Iranian Railway System during the reign of King Reza, Dorud quickly developed from a small and undeveloped city to a highly populated city, mostly due to immigration.
Dorud has occasionally suffered affecting natural disasters, including earthquake and floods, leaving hundreds of people killed, injured and homeless.

Sports

Dorud has one main football team, Gahar Zagros F.C., which plays in the Azadegan League of Iran. Gahar Zagros was the first team from the Province of Lorestan to make it to the Persian Gulf Pro League.

Government Protests in 2017

At least 5 people were killed in Dorud on 30th of December during 2017 Iranian protests. The New York Times reported 2 people killed in Dorud on 20th of December during 2017 Iranian protests. In an interview on state television, the Deputy Governor of Lorestan Province blamed demonstration violence on “enemies of the revolution, Takfiri groups and foreign agents…No shots were fired by the police and security forces.”
