Charles Bosanquet (academic)
Charles Ion Carr Bosanquet was the first Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University.Career
Born the son of Robert Carr Bosanquet, Bosanquet was educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained a first class honours degree in History. After a career in business and journalism, he worked as a civil servant during World War II. He then became Treasurer of Christ Church, Oxford. He was appointed Rector of King's College, Newcastle in 1952 and Vice Chancellor of Durham University, alternating in the role with the Warden of the Durham Colleges, and then became the first Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University in 1963 upon the independence of King's College from Durham University. In that role he welcomed Martin Luther King, Jr. to the University and presented him with a Doctor of Civil Law degree.
In 1931 he married Barbara Schiefflin, an American.
He lived at Rock Moor House near Alnwick and became High Sheriff of Northumberland.
