Cayetano Escudero Sanz
Cayetano Escudero Sanz' founded San Ildefonso in Culebra and created the first settlement with his family on October 27, 1880. The armed coat of Culebra is that of the Escudero families, the snake on it represents Culebra meaning serpent or snake in Espanol and the crown representing the inhabits sent to Culebra, before Sanz came, to protect it.
Born in the north of Spain, he immigrated to Puerto Rico as an adult and served as Vieques delegate to Culebra from 1880 to 1891.
