Guimard was thrice Argentine Champion. In 1936, he won the Mayor tournament, and in 1937 a match for the title against the champion, Roberto Grau. In March 1954, he played at 8th board against Isaac Boleslavsky in a match Argentina–Soviet Union in Buenos Aires. Guimard was awarded the International Master title in 1950, and the Grandmaster title in 1960. The opening 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nc6 is named for him, the Guimard Variation of the French Defense.
