Boston was named after Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was originally called New Boston, and under the latter name was laid out and platted in 1832. The first post office in Boston was established in 1837. On June 26, 1849, a cholera outbreak began, with the first death occurring the following day. Of the 120 residents at the time, 53 residents died over the following 5 weeks. The Boston Township Council is composed of 5 members with a council president.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.8% White, 0.7% Native American, and 1.4% Asian. There were 60 households, of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couplesliving together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.68. The median age in the town was 42 years. 22.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.7% were from 25 to 44; 26% were from 45 to 64; and 19.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 52.2% male and 47.8% female.

There were 67 households, out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% were non-families. 17.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.02. In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
