Amethi


Amethi is a town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a major town of the Amethi district, in the Faizabad division. The Hanumangarhi temple is located near the town.
The town is part of the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, which became reputed as a stronghold of the Indian National Congress party. The Congress leaders belonging to Nehru-Gandhi family won several elections from Amethi during 1980-2014.

History

In the past, Amethi used to be called Raipur-Amethi. Raipur is the place where the fort of Raja of Amethi is located. His ancestors used to reside in Raipur-Phulwari, where the old fort is still there. Amethi is also famous for the temple called Hanumangarhi and a mosque both built about hundred years ago. About three kilometres north of Amethi there is a tomb of famous poet which is in Ram Nagar, Saint Malik Muhammad Jayasi where he died, and the fort was built by Bachghoti Rajas.

Demographics

As of 2011 Indian Census, Amethi had a total population of 13,530, of which 7,093 were males and 6,437 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 1,850. The total number of literates in Amethi was 6,915, which constituted 51.1% of the population with male literacy of 55.6% and female literacy of 46.2%. The effective literacy rate of 7+ population of Amethi was 59.2%, of which male literacy rate was 64.7% and female literacy rate was 53.5%. The Scheduled Castes population was 3,344. Amethi had 30460 households in 2158.
As per the 2001 Census of India, Amethi had a population of 12,808. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Amethi has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Amethi is connected to the major cities in Uttar Pradesh and North-Eastern India via Indian Railways and roads. Amethi railway station has direct trains connecting with major cities like Jammu, Amritsar, Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Dehradun, Haridwar, Jaipur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Kolkata, Puri, Bhopal, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Allahabad Airport is the nearest airport which is 95 kilometers from Amethi.

Institutions, Industries and Organisations

A few public sector units were established in Amethi in the 1970s however not much has occurred in the town for the past two decades, leading to youngsters leaving the town in search of jobs.
Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust is one of the NGOs in Amethi district.  
A joint venture between Kalashnikov Concern and the Ordnance Factory Board to establish a rifle factory in Amethi is being negotiated between India and Russia, and is planned to be launched by October 2020.
