African-American beauty

Ideals of beauty in African-American communities have varied throughout the years.
Influenced by the hegemony of the majority white America, lighter skin tones and straight hair have sometimes been considered desirable characteristics both from whites and blacks.
At the end of the 20th century, relaxed hair styles such as the afro became popular, along with styles such as cornrows, braids, twists, the Jheri curl, and other styles.
