Abdul Ghani Abdul Hamid


Abdul Ghani Abdul Hamid, is an award-winning Singaporean writer, poet and artist. Hamid has written hundreds of stories, in English and Malay, and participated in more than 60 art exhibitions. He received the Anugerah Tun Seri Lanang in 1997, the Cultural Medallion for literature in 1999 and the Southeast Asia Write Award in 1998.

Life and career

Hamid was born on April 13, 1933, in Kampung Siglap, East Coast Road, Singapore. While studying in secondary school, he sent poems and articles written by himself to local Malay newspapers and magazines and held his inaugural art exhibition during a Youth Festival. After his studies, he worked as an apprentice at the Electrical Department of Keppel Harbour, fter which, he found a job as a clerk at the Public Utilities Board, then known as the Singapore Municipality. He left there in 1988.

Education

Hamid completed his secondary education at Raffles Institution.
