2020 Monguno and Nganzai massacres
On 13 June 2020, Islamic State in West Africa Province carried out massacres in Monguno and Nganzai, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, killing more than 60 people.
In Monguno, insurgents with rocket launchers killed at least 20 soldiers, set fire to the police station and burned the United Nations humanitarian hub. They distributed leaflets to residents, telling them not to work with the military, "white Christian Westerners" or other "non-believers".
In Nganzai, insurgents on motorcycles and in pickup trucks killed more than 40 residents.
Boko Haram frequently carry out attacks, most often in Borno State. They previously attacked Monguno in June, and September 2015 and Nganzai in July 2019. ISWAP claimed responsibility for the attacks in Monguno and Nganzai, as well as the Gubio massacre, which occurred in Borno State four days earlier.
