2009 French Open – Men's Singles

beat Robin Söderling in the final 6–1, 7–6, 6–4 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2009 French Open. Federer completed the career Grand Slam, and equaled Pete Sampras' then-record of 14 Grand Slam titles. This was Federer's fourth consecutive French Open final, having lost the previous three to Nadal.
Rafael Nadal was the four-time defending champion, but lost in the fourth round to Söderling in a huge upset. This was Nadal's first defeat at the French Open, having won the title in all four of his previous appearances at Roland Garros since debuting in 2005. With Nadal's loss, there would be a first-time French Open champion for 2009.
Until the 2016 Wimbledon, this was the last Grand Slam tournament that Novak Djokovic failed to reach the quarter-finals. He lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.
This was the last Grand Slam tournament for 2004 French Open Champion and former World No. 5 Gastón Gaudio and last French Open for 2002 Semifinalist and Former World No. 1 Marat Safin.
