2008 Australian Open – Men's Singles
defeated unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2008 Australian Open.
It was the first Grand Slam title of Djokovic's career, and the first of his eventual eight Australian Open titles. Djokovic became the first Serbian player to win a Grand Slam men's singles title.
It was also the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open that did not feature either Federer or Rafael Nadal, who were beaten by Djokovic and Tsonga, respectively, in the semi-finals.
Roger Federer was the two-time defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. This event marked the end of Federer's record 10 straight Grand Slam finals. Still, he became the first man to reach 15 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals, surpassing Roy Emerson and Ivan Lendl. This was the only Grand Slam tournament where Federer failed to reach the final between the 2005 Wimbledon Championships and the 2010 Australian Open, a span of 19 Grand Slam tournaments. He would go on to reach the next 8 Grand Slam finals in a row before losing in the quarterfinals at the 2010 French Open.Seeds
