The team finished the regular season with a 4–5–1 record and was the champion of the Middle Three Conference with a 2–0 record.
This year was celebrated as the centennial of college football, one hundred years since the 1869 game between Rutgers and Princeton. In this centennial year of Rutgers football, Lehigh defeated them, in an upset, 17-7. Coach Dunlap said "We beat Columbia, Colgate and Harvard in 1961, our Lambert Cup year and this is the greatest football triumph for us since then."
